Final

For this piece, I took photographs out of an old album that seemed to be accidents; pictures that were either not in focus, or of family members that are almost completely cropped out of the frame, or appearing unprepared to have their picture taken. It was these pictures that, to me, best captured a moment or the individual's personality. By replication, paper transfer, or cut out of the photo, I gave each one value and arranged them on the wall like how one arranges a picture wall in their entryway to mimic this point. Scrap wood is used to frame these pieces because best reflects the initial lack of value these sort of pictures tend to hold. The wood, especially accompanied with the dried rose, also serves the purpose of showing beauty in age and imperfection. This quick capturing of a moment reminded me of the idea behind Impressionism so for areas that are painted I tried to mimic the gestural strokes and the avoidance of black.

Shadow Drawing

This drawing, framed to mimic a Polaroid photograph, shows captured moments of people I care about most. Layered, these images reflect a whole experience. I chose charcoal as the medium, as it is a tool that lends itself to being very gestural, therefore best reflects these quick passing moments in life.

Drawing in Space

This video was inspired by a walk I went on around Sunset Rock, which is what the nature clips are from. Then it became very layered. On the surface it visually shows these memories I reflected on and the walking throughout the video serves to reflect this mere crossing of paths. Beneath that surface, however, it serves to speak to the nature of each individual. It draws the connection of our human nature. None of the clips show a person interacting with another so the clips themselves are more about the particular individual in them. For some who watch this video, it elicits emotions of nostalgia or happiness, a connection with those in the video, for others, a bit of uneasiness when the laughter of each person is empty and silenced by static. Both hold importance in the video as these memories do elicit the same positive emotions out of myself, but these are also all people that were in the midst of emotional struggles. The laughing and silliness also became a way to cope as it does with many people, thus the connection to nature; this is the way we deal in a life that just keeps moving forward. 

Drawing on Objects

As a child, my mom and I used to always paint on our plates. This quirky tradition was always very special to me and so it is the basis for my idea. On the plates, I painted objects that represent equally happy and special memories. These memories, in my mind and in this piece, stand above those within this time that are a bit painful. I created this in the piece by scanning a part of my journal that wrestles with the memories of the latter category, and having them printed onto a fabric, which now functions as the table cloth. I chose to display them on an old dinner table to complete the look of dinner time, a traditional basis for memories in most families' lives.
